Many
of you may have heard the old story of the Western traveler--highly
educated and sophisticated in his Western tradition--discussing
the structure of the Universe with an Indian, equally
highly educated and sophisticated in his Eastern tradition.
The Indian insisted on his own cosmogony, according
to which the world rested on three Elephants, which
in turn rested on a huge Turtle swimming in a vast Ocean.
The Western traveler asked the Indian what was to be
found beneath the turtle. "Another Turtle",
answered the Indian. "And what is under this other
Turtle?" the Western traveler insisted. "Still
Another Turtle", answered the Indian calmly. "And
what is under this Still Another Turtle?" insisted
the Western traveler angrily again. "Oh, Mister,
it is not worth asking any further", the Indian
said, "there are only turtles beneath".
